Modification in Facebook’s news feed: Why it changed and what is?

It seems like facebook has truly adapted a saying in terms of changing “to improve is to change; to be perfect is to change regularly”. We appreciate the changes in facebook in its desktop and mobile version within their specific interval, by adding something new, unique and trending.

News feed is being a new addition to facebook, which appears on the right hand side of the page. The news feed is not same as it was past six months before, in reference to its content and appearance. Facebook is learning more about you and due to which a new algorithm for news feed is being developed by company to determine user’s likes and dislikes.


On an average a facebook user has roughly 1400+ stories per day that appears in the news feed column. 20% of the stories are being surfaced by facebook. Thus the algorithm tweak your news feed in this manner. This social network is being busy with updates of newsfeed, re-designing algorithm to read the goal of the product.

What has being change in newsfeed?


Auto play videos:


In September facebook tested auto play videos in mobile version, and in web version it was made live in December. These videos played automatically as you scroll through news feed. No sound is being heard unless user clicks on them. A surprising feature is that it does not include videos from third part like YouTube, but only plays videos directly upload to facebook.

Larger Photos:



In March facebook try to re-design news feed and added larger photos in news feed. Other promises made by the company where in case user can subscribe the news feed, and some multiple tabs news feed also, but as of now nothing can be seen in the changes till date.

Quality news stories.


According to company’s blog “high quality posts” are being covered in the news feed. This change was adapted in December and desktop and mobile version both are being updated with this change.

One more algorithm was being designed by facebook in February so that it can help brands to increase their audiences. The algorithm is designed is such a way that one brand can tag another brand and their content can audiences of both brand pages.

Example: If Dominos pizza made a partner ship with Shah Rukh khan and tags him in his post, then the post would appear on both of the brand pages and thus audiences would grow from both of the sides.

The new algorithm is designed in such a way that user would get more then what they actually think.


We hope facebook improves more and more and remove the unnatural and unhealthy posts that have abusive language or posts related to politics and other categories.
